Introduction of Pok Fu Lam

Pok Fu Lam is located in HK Island district and it is part of the Hong Kong suburb. Normally it is the area from south of Mount Davis to souther area of Aberdeen. But sometimes it also include the central and western district in Mid-levels. The general explanation of the place name source of Pok Fu Lam is there was thick woods here and many wild ducks (cotton teals) were perched on the woods. Wild duck in Cantonese is Pok Fu and woods in Cantonese is Lam. So the area here name Pok Fu Lam.

【History】

Pok Fu Lam Village is a historic village, It has existed since the beginning of the 17th century. During War of the Three Feudatories in period of Kang Xi, there were about two thousands people took refuge here and became the earliest original people of Hong Hong. Local residents in the past have repeatedly asked the government to give indigenous inhabitants of Pok Fu Lam the same recognition as residents of theNew Territories. These claims have been rejected by the government which also threatened demolition of the village.

When 1860s, it is a place for Britain businessmen avoiding summer heat. Many villas stood in mid and peak of the mountain. There were watch rooms in peak and flagpole in outdoor. The watchman would raised the flag if boat arrived. Nearby the Pok Fu Lam, there was racecourse and park above 100 decares. Pok Fu Lam's nearby site was one of the old " Hong Kong Eight Sights"

When 1883, the first pond of Hong Kong built in Pok Fu Lam. The spring water from Victoria Peak and was lead to the pond by tunnel supplying water for Hong Kong.

When 1885, the first pasture of Hong Kong built by Hong Kong milk company named " Pok Fu Lam pasture". It was located in the current location of Chi Fu Fa Yuen.

When 1911, University of Hong Kong found in north of Pok Fu Lam. It attracted many teaching and administrative staff and students lived in Pok Fu Lam district and there are still many dormitory exist currently.

When 1937, " the largest scale of hospital in Far-Eastern" Queen Mary Hospital opened and it still is one of the most important hospital in Hong Kong now.

When 1970s', Hong Kong government published " Pok fu lam Moratorium" to restrict the development of the district on the reason that the traffic facilities were incomplete. It made Pok fu lam in medium and low density development until now.

【Sights】

Pok Fu Lam Country Park is located in Hong Kong Southern District. The Pok Fu Lam Pond and green avenue form the park's special sights. It is urbanization residential area and tourist attractions on the peak. So the park is in two parts which are natural park and residential area. The special of Pok Fu Lam Country Park is the local trees study path. It is the first path introducing local plant varieties in Hong Kong and it need about 45 minutes to walk the whole path. The park supply complete facilities such as pavilion, toilet, observatory, fitness facilities, outing site and map signs etc.

【life】

Most private houses ( such as Chi Fu Fa Yuen and Residence Bel-Air) and villas in southern area of Pok Fu Lam gathers many middle class and upper class people. Compare to the intensive buildings in downtown, Pok Fu Lam has green trees and wide sea. The sea view is all on the way driving to the houses on peak. Low density houses here have full sea view french windows and capacious space.

Chi Fu Fa Yuen is a large housing project in Hong Kong Southern District developed by HK Land in 1978. It is located in Chi Fu Road and Chi Fu path, Pok Fu Lam where was the Pok Fu Lam pasture. The facilities include swimming pool, shuttle buses, parking lot, bus terminal, mini bus and 24 hours property management by Kai Shing management. Chi Fu Fa Yuen composes by 20 buildings in 27 layers and 7 units of "Elegant house" in 5 layers. The buildings are line in S shape and it totally supply more than 4,200 units. Half of them facing sea can enjoy the views of West Lamma Channel and the three smokestack of the Lamma Island Power Station.

Residence Bel-Air is a large expensive private housing project developed by PCCW Limited. It has 3 phases and 25 buildings. The second phase is South Towers and the third phase is Bel-Air on the Peak. The units are all large units above 2 rooms 2 halls layout in 825 sq ft. The utility ratio is 82%. Developer described this project is comparable with projects in southern part of France. During the projects under building, it also include phase five (Villa Bel-Air) compose by 29 individual houses and phase six (Bel-Air No.8) compose by 8 buildings in wave shape.

【Education and Medical】

The Hong Kong and Asia famous school University of Hong Kong and the Far East largest hospital Queen Mary Hospital are located in Pok Fu Lam. The school net in Pok Fu Lam is No. 18 primary school net and south net of middle school.

University of Hong Kong found in 1910 and former was The Hong Kong college of medicine. It is the oldest college in Hong Kong. Many buildings in the college are historical and in special design. The teaching language in the college is English. On Asia university ranking first published by the international higher education research institutions QS, University of Hong Kong ranked first in Asia. The second was Chinese University of Hong Kong. The fourth was Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. In Asia's best university investigation, Master of Business Administration of business college in University of Hong Kong ranked the second.

Queen Mary Hospital opened on 13th, April, 1937 and named after current queen of King George v. It is one of the major public hospital in Hong Kong and also is the teaching hospital of Lee Ka-shing medical college of University of Hong Kong. Queen Mary Hospital managed by Hong Kong Hospital Authority. It supplies about 1,440 beds and hires more than 3,800 staffs. Include services of 24 hours emergency, specialized subjects and rehabilitation nursing.
